Foods with functional claims
What are functional foods?
Until now, foods that could display functional claims were limited to "Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU)" individually approved by the government and "Nutrient Function Foods" that met national standards.
Therefore, in order to increase the number of products with clearly displayed functionalities and to enable consumers to obtain accurate information and make informed choices about such products, the "Foods with Functional Claims" system was launched in April 2015.
This system requires businesses to display scientifically-backed functional information at their own responsibility, and information regarding the safety and basis of the functional information is submitted to the Commissioner of the Consumer Affairs Agency before sale.
